TENSE TUESDAY: BE GOING TO FOR PREDICTIONS & PLANS: meaning and examples

Hello everyone, and welcome to today's Daily Vitamin! I hope your day is going well.

This month, we have looked at WILL INFINITIVE vs. BE GOING TO INFINITIVE a few times. To express the future, we generally use one of these two combinations:

--> WILL INFINITIVE

--> BE GOING TO INFINITIVE

Often we can use them interchangeably, but there are times when one is more appropriate.

On November 3, we looked at
WILL INFINITIVE for promises

Example 1:
I will never lie to you.

On November 18, we looked at
WILL INFINITIVE for quick decisions

Example 2:
(The doorbell rings.) I'll get it!

Today, we are looking at
BE GOING TO. We use this form when we talk about future predictions based on evidence we have in the present.

Example 3:
(It is cloudy outside.) It is going to rain

Example 4:
(It is cold and you do not have a jacket.) I am going to get sick.

In each of these situations, we have a present condition and we are making a prediction about the future based on this information.

We also use BE GOING TO INFINITIVE to talk about definite plans in the future.

Example 5:
This weekend I am going to see a film. Do you want to come?

Example 6: Next summer I'm going to go to Egypt with my family
.
