TO GET (BE) FED UP WITH

Good morning. I hope you had a pleasant weekend. We are going to dedicate this week of Daily Vitamins to words and expressions related to the word or concept FULL (lleno), so I hope you've had your breakfast! We will start today by reviewing an expression that we explained in a Daily Vitamin from 2004. Today's expression is: fed up with It means: to be annoyed or bored with something or someone. The word fed comes from the verb feed (alimentar), so we can imagine the expression fed up with to mean that we have 'taken in' or 'ingested' somebody else's actions to the limit. We cannot "take" anymore of their behaviour. Example 1 I'm getting fed up with Margaret's continual complaints about my cooking. If she doesn't like it, she should cook for herself! Example 2 Everybody is fed up with playing this game. Why don't we do something else? You can also use the adjective fed up without specifying what you are fed up with. Example 3 Elaine looks a bit fed up. Perhaps we should leave her alone. Tomorrow we will learn another common expression related to the concept FULL.
