MERRY CHRISTMAS 2009

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning everyone.

Today is the last Daily Vitamin until Thursday, January 7th 2010. Like every year, I wanted to use this last message to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I very much appreciate your loyalty and enthusiasm for the Daily Vitamin.

In 2010 we will enter our 7th year of the Daily Vitamin and will reach over 1500 different lessons, all of which you can access on our web in the Daily Vitamin section. Any suggestions for topics will be greatly appreciated. It's not always possible to cover every requested topic, but I will do my best.

If you haven't seen it already, I encourage you to access the 2009 Christmas card that we created for all of you; it's at the following link:

You can also access past Christmas cards, some of which have sound (2005) and animation (2005 and 2006).

GADGET

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning everyone.

Today's word is: gadget

Meaning: a small tool or device that does something useful.

Example 1
Every Christmas millions of people receive electronic gadgets as gifts.

Following is an example that I took from a news story on the BBC: (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4663458.stm).

Example 2:
Some dwellings have installed an inverter, a gadget to transform a 12 volt output into 220 volts - ideal for domestic appliances.

Another similar word (synonym) is gizmo.

Example 3:
By next Christmas, there will be some great new gizmo that everyone will want to use.

People who are able to be amused and to laugh or smile at something funny are considered to have a sense of humour.

FALL-4

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning! Today is the last Essential Weekly Vitamin until Friday January 8th, 2010.

Hoy miramos otro uso del verbo to fall. Hasta ahora hemos visto las expresiones to fall in love (enamorarse) y to fall for something (creer que un truco o una broma es verdad). Además, hemos visto un uso autónomo de to fall con el significado "to reduce the amount, level or value of something" (reducir la cantidad, nivel o valor de algo) y la semana pasada vimos el uso de fall para indicar un cambio de un estado a otro ("to change from one state to another state").

Today's expression with fall is: to fall from power (caer del poder)

It means: to lose a position of power (perder una posición/puesto de poder)

Example 1
Some think that Spain's current Prime Minister will fall from power in the next elections.

I hope you have a nice day and a great weekend!

GET YOUR MONEY'S WORTH

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning.

Today's expression is: to get your money's worth.

It means: to feel that something you have received is worth the amount that you paid for it.

Example:
I paid only 8,000 euros for this car 10 years ago and it is still running perfectly. I really feel like I got my money's worth when I bought it.

Remember that tomorrow we will send the Essential Weekly Vitamin for Spanish-speaking students of English.

Have a great day!
