SLIP-4 (HAPPY HALLOWEEN!)

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Hello everyone. Happy Halloween! I hope you have a spook-tacular day!

Today we finish our series of Daily Vitamins about expressions with the word SLIP.

Today's expression is: TO GIVE SOMEONE THE SLIP (INFORMAL)

Meaning: to escape or get away from someone who is following or chasing you.

Example 1:
We were following the suspect closely but he gave us the slip.

Example 2:
When I left the office today, there was a strange man following me; however, I gave him the slip on a crowded street. I wonder who he was.

There will be no Essential Weekly Vitamin tomorrow since it is All Saints Day, which is a bank holiday in Spain. We'll be back on Monday.

Today we look at another expression with the word SLIP.

Today's expression is: A SLIP OF THE TONGUE

Meaning: a small mistake in something that you say.

Example 1:
Did I call you Mary? I'm sorry Mariano... that was just a slip of the tongue.

Example 2:
I didn't mean to say that, honey. I'm sorry. It was a slip of the tongue.

Good morning again everyone.

Today we continue our series of lessons about expressions with the word SLIP.

Today's expression is: SLIP THROUGH THE NET

Meaning: when someone slips through the net, an organization or a system fails to find them and deal with them.

Example 1:
We tried to contact all of the former students for the class reunion, but several have slipped through the net. We just can't find them.

Example 2:
The system is failing and people who have lost their job or who badly need help are still slipping through the net.

Last Tuesday we looked at the expression slip your mind, and this week we have decided to do a series about expressions with SLIP.

Today's expression is: LET SOMETHING SLIP

It means: to give someone information that is supposed to be secret.

It is a synonym of last week's expression, spill the beans.

Example 1:
Despite being pressured, he tried not to let slip what he knew about the new marketing project.

Example 2:
I accidentally let it slip that he had given me more than 1,000.00€ for the car.

OVER THE TOP (EWV)

Good morning again! Welcome to another Essential Weekly Vitamin for Spanish-speaking students of English.

Today's expression is: OVER THE TOP (more common in UK English)
(La expresión de hoy es: OVER THE TOP (más común en el Reino Unido)

It refers to: something that is excessive or exaggerated.
(Se refiere a: algo que es excesivo, exagerado o fuera de lugar.)

Example 1:
Derek: Did you see Alan's suit jacket today? I know he likes to be fashionable but it was completely over the top.
(¿Has visto la americana de Alan hoy? Sé que le gusta la moda, aunque estaba totalmente fuera de lugar.)
Louis: I agree. Yellow-and-black spots are just not appropriate office wear. He looked like some kind of jungle animal!
(Estoy de acuerdo. Lunares amarillos y negros no son apropiados para la ropa del trabajo. ¡Parecía un animal de la jungla!)

Example 2:
Mary is always completely over the top in everything she says and does. She is constantly challenging and provoking people.
