Hello again. 

Hoy terminamos nuestra serie de Essential Weekly Vitamins sobre expresiones con el verbo TO LEAVE.

Today's expression isto leave somebody behind
(La expresión de hoy es: dejar a alguien atrás)

Meaning 1: to make much better progress than somebody.
(Significado 1: progresar más rápidamente que otra persona.)

NOTA: a menudo usamos esta expresión en el pasivo.

Example 1:
Spain is being left behind in the race for new markets in Europe.
(España se está quedado atrás en la carrera por los nuevos mercados en Europa.)

Example 2:
China has left the rest of the world behind in economic growth.
(China ha dejado al resto del mundo atrás en cuanto a crecimiento económico.)

Meaning 2: to leave a person or place, usually permanently.
(Significado 2: dejar a una persona o un lugar, normalmente para siempre.)

Example 3:
As she left the village to move to the far-away city, she knew she was leaving her childhood behind.
(Al salir del pueblo para mudarse a una ciudad lejana, sabía que estaba dejando su niñez atrás.)

EXPRESSIONS WITH LARGE-4

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning again everyone. 

Today we look at one final expression with the word LARGE.

Today's expression is: At large

This expression has two meanings; one that can be a synonym of yesterday's expression, by and large, and another new meaning.

Meaning 1 (synonym of by and large): when used after a noun, as a whole; in general.

Example 1:
The opinion of the public at large is that most politicians are corrupt.

Meaning 2: not captured; free (when referring to a dangerous person or animal).

Example 2:
She will not be satisfied as long as her husband's killer is still at large.

Today we continue looking at English expressions with the word LARGE.

Today's expression is: By and large (informal)

Meaning: used when you are saying something that is generally, but no completely, true.

Example 1:
By and large, I had a great time at the party; however, I didn't like the music too much.

Example 2:
By and large, I enjoyed my time at university.

Today's expression is: In large part / in large measure (formal)

Meaning: to a great extent; mostly

Example 1:
The success of the event was due, in large part, to Andrew's excellent organisational skills.

Example 2:
The film's power comes in large part from an excellent and realistic screenplay.

This week we are going to look at some expressions with the word LARGE, which is a synonym of last week's word, BIG.

Today's expression is: larger than life

Meaning: looking or behaving in a way that is more interesting or exciting than other people, and so is likely to attract attention.

Example 1:
Jack is a larger-than-life guy; he's noisy, very friendly and always making jokes.

Example 2:
Many of the characters in Almodóvar's films are larger than life.
