3-THIRD TIME LUCKY
3-THIRD TIME LUCKY: meaning and examples
Good morning. I hope you had a good weekend.
Today we continue with our countdown to our 1000th (one thousandth) Daily Vitamin. Just three days to go!
Today's expression is: Third time lucky (US: third time is the charm)
Meaning: used when you have failed to do something twice and you hope to succeed the third time. We often say it just before trying something for the third time.
Example 1:
Peter Mandelson was forced to resign twice from Tony Blair's Cabinet, but now Mr Brown has called him back to the Cabinet. Mr Mandelson declared himself to be third time lucky.
Example 2:
Speaker 1: I have failed the driving exam twice already!
Speaker 2: Don't worry, the third time is the charm.
