ABBREVIATIONS-4
ABBREVIATIONS-4: meaning and examples
Good morning again.
Today we continue our review of some common abbreviations in English.
Today's first abbreviation is: UFO (= OVNI in Spanish)
It stands for: Unidentified Flying Object
This abbreviation is used in writing and speaking. Virtually no one says unidentified flying object instead of UFO.
Example 1:
Hank said he saw a UFO yesterday as he was leaving his house very early in the morning. Frankly, I think he's a bit mad.
Today's second abbreviation is: PA
It stands for: Personal Assistant OR Public Address System (= megafonía in Spanish)
Example 2 (Personal Assistant):
Frank: I need that report ASAP. What's taking you so long?
Julie: I'm so sorry Frank. My PA has been ill and I'm a bit behind on my work. Don't worry, I'll have it to you by tomorrow morning.
Example 3 (Public Address System):
She lost her daughter in the supermarket, so she asked the manager to call her over the PA system.
