ADEMÁS in ENGLISH-1: meaning and examples

Good morning.

For the next couple of days we are going to look at how we represent the meaning of the Spanish adverb /preposition además (de) in English. It doesn't matter if you are not a Spanish speaker; I think you will find these lessons helpful.

Depending on the context, the adverb además or the preposition además de is translated into English in different ways. Some possibilities are as well as, besides, and anyway, moreover, furthermore, and what's more, apart from, or not only.

In some way, all of these words express the idea of in addition to or also. We use them to add more information or evidence to a situation.

Example 1:
She is working as well as studying. (In addition to working, she is studying.)

Example 2:
Why are you going to buy that jacket? It's expensive, and besides, it doesn't look good on you.

The trick to understanding these different expressions is to see lots of examples; therefore, tomorrow we will continue with more examples.
