ANIMAL EXPRESSIONS: FISH
ANIMAL EXPRESSIONS: FISH: meaning and examples
Hello again.
Today we continue with our series of Daily Vitamins that use animal expressions. Today's animal is fish (pez).
Today's 1st expression is: there are plenty more fish in the sea (spoken)
It means: there are many other people or things that are as good as the one you have failed to get. Especially common in a situation where someone has lost a boyfriend or girlfriend. We use this expression to console them.
Example 1:
David: I can't believe that Victoria has left me. I really thought she loved me, not only my money.
Raul: Don't worry Dave. There are plenty of other fish in the sea. I'm sure you'll find someone else.
Today's 2nd expression is: to have a bigger or other fish to fry
It means: to have more important things to do or to think about.
Example 2:
John: Can you please help me with the report that we have to turn in tomorrow.
Alex: I'm sorry John. I have bigger fish to fry. I have a meeting with the vice president in ten minutes. Ask Janet to help you.
Today's 3rd expression is: to drink like a fish (humorous)
It means: to drink a lot of alcohol regularly.
Example 3:
I would love to hire Andrew. I think he's a very capable person, but he drinks like a fish; I can't risk having someone like that on the staff.
