ANIMAL EXPRESSIONS: FLY
ANIMAL EXPRESSIONS: FLY: meaning and examples
Good morning.
Today we will look at expressions in English that use the word fly (mosca).
Today's 1st expression is: a fly on the wall
It means: a person who watches others without being noticed.
Example 1:
I'd love to be a fly on the wall when she tells him that she wants a divorce. He is going to be devastated.
We often create an adjective with this expression by adding hyphens between the words. A Fly-on-the-wall documentary, for example, is a film in which people are filmed going about their daily lives as if the camera were not there.
Today's 2nd expression is: to go down or drop like flies
It means: when people or other living beings get ill or die in large numbers very quickly.
Example 2:
People are dropping like flies with the flu (gripe) that is going around.
Today's 3rd expression is: on the fly (informal, "fly" here comes from volar not mosca)
It means: in a very quick and informal way.
Example 3:
We had to eat our lunch on the fly because the meeting starts at 15:30.
