ARTICLES IN ENGLISH

Today we continue with our series of Daily Vitamins about challenging English grammar. Today we look at articles. 

When speakers of English learn Spanish, the articles can be very challenging, because of the distinction between gender and number ("el/los", "la/las", "un/unos" and "una/unas"). English only has "a," "an" and "the." However, it can be very tricky for Spanish speakers to use articles in English because often where you use an article in English you don't in Spanish and vice-versa. 

For example, when we are speaking in general, we generally don't use the definite article "the," but in Spanish yes. 

Example 1: I like vegetables. (in general)
Example 1 (Spanish): Me gusta la verdura.

Example 2: I like the vegetables that you cooked. (Here we're speaking about specific vegetables, so we include the definite article, the)

That's just one of the differences. As I said, understanding when and how to use articles can be tricky for Spanish learners, and I won't be able to answer all of your questions in today's Daily Vitamin.
