BET-1: meaning and examples
This week in the Daily Vitamin we will be looking at expressions with the word BET. The idea for this week's Vitamins came from our Office Manager, Judit.
To bet is to "risk money on a race or an event by trying to predict the results." We also BET playing card games, such as poker. There are also lots of expressions with the verb BET, which is what we're going to look at this week.
Today's expression is: You bet (spoken)
Meaning: used instead of "yes" to emphasize that someone has guessed something correctly or made a good suggestion. It is an informal expression, and is used in conversation.
Example 1:
Ana: Are you nervous Mariano?
Mariano: You bet I am! End of quote. ;-)
Example 2:
Arthur: Are you going to the company Christmas dinner this Friday?
Andrew: You bet. I wouldn't miss it for the world; everyone is going to be there.
Enjoy the rest of your day!
