BODY EXPRESSIONS: FOOT: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we will look at a few of the many English expressions that use the word foot

Today's 1st expression is: to get your foot in the door

Meaning: to manage to enter an organisation, a business, etc. that could bring you success.

Example 1
I always wanted to work in television, but it took me almost three years just to get a foot in the door.

Today's 2nd expression is: to put your foot in it (to put your foot in your mouth: US)

Meaning: to say or do something that upsets, offends or embarrasses someone.

Example 2:
I really did put my foot in it with Jason. I had no idea that he had split up with Lori and I was asking him why she didn't come with him tonight. I feel horrible.

Today's 3rd expression is: ...my foot! (informal, humorous)

Meaning: used to say that you completely disagree with what someone has just said.

Example 3:
Alex: Jason can't come to the party next week because he has to work.
John: Work my foot! He just doesn't want to come because he doesn't want to see Lori.
