BODY EXPRESSIONS: TONGUE: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we will look at some expressions with tongue (lengua).

Today's 1st expression is: to set tongues wagging (informal)

Meaning: to cause people to start talking about someone's private life.  (wag=menear)

Example 1
TV programmes that focus on the personal lives of famous people have the sole objective of setting tongues wagging. And the more controversy they create, the more tongues wag.

Today's 2nd expression is: tongue-in-cheek

Meaning: intended to be humorous and not meant seriously, although usually with sarcasm.

Example 2:
I asked you a very serious question and you gave me a very tongue-in-cheek answer. Can't you be serious for even one minute!

Today's 3rd expression is: to bite your tongue

Meaning: to stop yourself from saying something that you would like to say, because it might make someone upset or angry.

Example 3:
When Darren began explaining how he was going to buy the bar with money from his parents, I had to bite my tongue. I don't know why he has to invent such stories to impress his friends. I guess he's a bit insecure.
