Meaning: to reduce tension between people when first meeting.
Sentence 1: Before the meeting started, I made a joke about my always being late, which made everyone laugh. That helped to break the ice.
Sentence 2: At the beginning of the party almost no one was speaking with each other and there was very little interaction. Then I did a get-to-know-you activity which broke the ice. Suddenly the room was full of activity and lots of noise.
