BRIDGE THE KNOWING DOING GAP: meaning and examples

Hello and welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you are having a good week.

This week in the Daily Vitamin lessons we are covering key points related to learning a language. If you truly want to learn English, you have to change something.

On Monday we spoke about responsibility and decision and yesterday we spoke about consistency. Today we speak about the Knowing-Doing Gap (KDG).

The Knowing-Doing Gap
Do you know what you need to do to improve your English but struggle to follow through? That is the Knowing-Doing Gap. In other words, you know what you have to do but you're not doing it; what you need to do is not part of your habitual, daily routine yet.

To overcome the KDG, start small. Your objective is to create a habit that sticks. Revise the Daily Vitamin lessons from Monday and Tuesday and follow the ideas that I presented. Often, starting is the hardest part, but once you begin, you’ll find it easier to continue. For example, if you’re learning new vocabulary, choose 5 words, write them down, and create a sentence with each one. Action turns knowledge into progress, so don’t overthink it—just start.

Homework
Reading these lessons is not enough; find some time to take action by doing this simple homework.

👉 Starting today, commit to doing something with English every day for at least 5 minutes every day this month. If you do more than 5 minutes that's great, but the objective is to create consistency; so if you can only do 5 minutes that's okay.

When I sit down to study for 5 minutes, I often end up working for 20 or 30 minutes (or more). It's the start that is the most challenging. So make a committed decision to do the 5 minutes every day this month.

Are you committed to dedicating at least 5 minutes per day to your English studies this month in order to close your Knowing-Doing Gap? Let us know on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky).
