BUSINESS EXPRESSIONS ABOUT CHANGING PLANS: 'TO TABLE'
BUSINESS EXPRESSIONS ABOUT CHANGING PLANS: 'TO TABLE': meaning and examples
Welcome back, everyone! I hope that you had a nice Easter break. Are you ready for more English lessons?
This week we are looking at Business Expressions. We are looking specifically at business expressions for changing plans or doing something later. We all know that in business we have to make and change plans often. I hope these expressions are useful to you.
We begin with the expression TO TABLE (SOMETHING).
Definition (US): to postpone a discussion about something, often with no definite plan about when to discuss it again.
Example 1: I'm not sure we have the money for the festival. Let's table this until summer.
Example 2: They decided to table discussions about moving to another office.
Definition (UK): to suggest something for discussion
Example 3: The suggestion was tabled for discussion at a later date.
Example 4: We tabled Ann's idea
Notice that this expression has the opposite meaning in US and UK English. In the US a topic is tabled when it will not be discussed more and in the UK the topic is tabled when there is interest in discussing it more.
TO TABLE may sound strange because the word TABLE is also a common noun. Can you think of any other nouns that also have verb forms? Tell us on our Facebook or Twitter pages.
