CACHONDEO: meaning and examples
Good morning!
I hope you had a really great weekend! Occasionally at the Daily Vitamin we get a request for the translation, into English, of a Spanish word or expression. So, this week, our series of Daily Vitamins is going to answer some of those questions that we have received recently.
Our question today is... how do you say CACHONDEO in English, as in "Esto es un cachondeo"?
Today's words are: A LAUGH, A JOKE
These words can be used in different English expressions, depending on whether the meaning of the sentence is serious or ironic. In the following three examples we see three different translations of the phrase "estar de cachondeo/ser un cachondeo".
Example 1 (serious):
The group of boys were having a laugh together in the park after school.
Example 2 (seriously):
Annie: I won a trip to New York!
Leanne: You're joking!
Annie: No, I really did!
Example 3 (ironically)
Sam: Can you believe that he is accused of corruption and he is still occupying his seat in parliament as a senator?
Mark: This country is a total joke. The government keeps saying they are going to get serious about fighting corruption but I don't see any action, do you?
Sam: Nope!
