CARAT: meaning and examples

Meaning 1: a unit for measuring how pure gold is. The purest gold is 24 carats.
Example 1:
He bought his fiancée an 18-carat gold ring.
Interestingly, the pronunciation of carat (quilate) is exactly the same as carrot (zanahoria).
Meaning 2: a carat is also a unit for measuring the weight of diamonds and other precious stones. A carat is equal to 200 milligrams.
Example 2:
She bought her daughter a one carat diamond ring for her graduation. They must have a lot of money.
