COMMON METAPHORS FOR EVERYDAY LANGUAGE
COMMON METAPHORS FOR EVERYDAY LANGUAGE: meaning and examples
Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you had a great weekend, and I hope that your week has started off well.
This week we are going to look at some common metaphors that we use in everyday language. Using these metaphors can make your English a little more interesting.
Today's 1st metaphor is: Time is a thief
Meaning / Use: This metaphor suggests that time can steal moments from our lives, when we feel like we don’t have enough time to do what we want to do.
Dialogue 1:
Emma: I can’t believe my kids are already in high school. It feels like just yesterday they were learning to walk.
Jake: I know what you mean. Time is a thief; it takes away the little moments before we even realize they’re gone.
Emma: Exactly! I wish I could go back and relive some of those days.
Jake: Me too. But maybe the best we can do is cherish every moment we still have.
Today's 2nd metaphor is: The world is a stage
Meaning / Use: This metaphor implies that life is like a performance, where we play different roles depending on the context.
Dialogue 2 (a father giving advice to his son):
Son: Dad, I feel like I have to act differently around different people. At school, at home... even with my friends.
Dad: That’s normal. The world is a stage, and we all play different parts depending on where we are.
Son: But what if I don’t like some of the roles I have to play?
Dad: Then rewrite the script, son. Be the kind of person you want to be, no matter what stage you’re on.
👉 Now it's your turn. I encourage you to write your own sentence or dialogue with one or both of today's phrases. You can post your sentences or dialogues on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky) and we will give you feedback about your writing as soon as possible.
Enjoy the rest of your day!
