COMMONLY CONFUSED WORDS: ACCEPT vs. EX: meaning and examples
Good morning everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin! I hope you had an excellent weekend.
Thanks again to all of you who participated in the 2024 Alphabet Game. Later on today we will send/post more information about the winners.
This week we are going to finish up the 2023-2024 academic year with a series of lessons about words that are often confused in English. Often their spelling is very similar and their pronunciation is similar, or the same; but they are different words with different meanings.
Today's words that are often confused are ACCEPT and EXCEPT.
Meaning of Accept: to agree to take something; to say yes to something.
Example 1: I offered an apology to my boss and, luckily, she accepted it.
Meaning of Except: this is a preposition or a conjunction that means "not including; but not."
Example 2: The restaurant is open every day of the week, except Mondays.
Pronunciation Accept: At the following link to the Cambridge online dictionary, you can hear the pronunciation of this word in "standard" UK and US English.
