COOL-4: meaning and examples

Hello everyone!

Today we finish our look at some expressions that use the adjective cool.

Today's 1st expression is: to cool your heels (informal)

Meaning: to have to wait for someone or something. If you leave someone to cool their heels, you make them wait until they have calmed down.

Example 1:
Jack, could you please just cool your heels. We'll finish in five minutes and then you can give us your proposals before the meeting is over.

Today's 2nd expression is: to cool somebody down (informal)

Meaning: to make someone feel colder OR to make someone calm, less excited or less enthusiastic.

Example 2:
Boy it's hot today. Here, have a glass of cold water to cool yourself down.

Example 3:
As he was yelling at me, I tried to listen and smile slightly. It seemed to cool him down after a few minutes.
