COULD YOU HELP ME WITH DIRECTIONS?: meaning and examples
Good morning / afternoon / evening everyone, depending on when you are reading this. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you are having an excellent day.
As you may know, this week we are looking at different phrases and expressions that we use when we are travelling to ask for different information. Even if you are not travelling, you might use these functional phrases in any place that you are not familiar with.
Today's travel-related question is: COULD YOU HELP ME WITH DIRECTIONS?
Meaning: This is a version of yesterday's phrase. When we are in a city or town that we are not familiar with, this is a common phrase that we can use to ask for instructions about how to arrive to a specific location. When we use this phrase, we probably have directions to the place we are looking for, but there is some confusion so we are asking for clarification.
Example 1:
Janet: Excuse me, could you help me with directions?
Patrick: Sure... what is your destination?
Janet: I'm trying to find the football stadium and on this map; it says that it's here [pointing to map], but I can't seem to find it.
Patrick: You're fine. Just continue down this street and turn right on 47th street and you'll see it on the left. You can't miss it.
Janet: Thank you very much!
Patrick: You're welcome
Example 2:
Lisa: Hello. Excuse me. I'm trying to find the train station. Could you help me with directions?
Jerry: Yes. No problem. It is quite far from here, so I recommend you take the metro. Just catch the blue line to the Sants Station. There is a stop just 50 metres up this street where you can catch the metro.
Lisa: Thank you so much!
Jerry: No problem. Enjoy the rest of your day.
