Meaning: to do something even though you think that there is only a small possibility of it being successful.
Example 1:
I called the office on the off chance that you would still be there. However, your secretary told me that you had already left for home.
Example 2:
She visually scanned the crowd at the party on the off chance of seeing someone that she knew.
