Definition: The car or person that should proceed first; the person or car that other people or cars yield to.
Example 1: In a crosswalk, pedestrians always have the right of way. Cars must always stop.
Example 2: If two cars approach an intersection at the same time, the car on the right goes first because it has the right of way.
