EMPLOY: meaning and examples

Good morning!

Tomorrow is May Day, the first of May, here in Europe, which is a celebration of workers' rights. In recognition of this, we are going to explain four forms of the word EMPLOY. I recommend listening to the sound file to hear how the syllable stress changes depending on the word form.

TO EMPLOY (verb, active) --> to contract or hire someone to do a job.

Example 1:
Acme Corporation are employing qualified works for their new plant.

TO BE EMPLOYED (verb, passive) --> to have a job.

Example 2:
I'm employed as a part-time nurse at a private clinic. I work the weekend shift.

EMPLOYER (noun) --> a person or company that contracts or hires workers.

Example 3:
My first employer was very kind. He taught me a lot about how to do my job well.

EMPLOYEE (noun, person) --> a worker, a person who has a job.

Example 4:
The company has 250 employees at its Hungarian factory and a further 55 employees at the head office in Germany.

EMPLOYMENT (noun, state) --> the act of being employed; the situation in which people have work. The opposite is UNEMPLOYMENT, which means to NOT have a job.

Example 5:
The unemployment rates for Spanish youth are the highest in Europe. The government must introduce programmes to encourage employment for this population.

There won't be a Daily Vitamin tomorrow due to the May Day holiday, but we'll be back on Thursday.

Have a great day and a relaxing day tomorrow, if you are able to take a holiday!
