EXPRESSING SYMPATHY AND CONDOLENCES: meaning and examples

Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin and welcome to March. I hope you are having a good day and I hope you had an excellent weekend.

This week we are going to concentrate on phrases and expressions that we can use to express sympathy and condolences. This is something that can be very challenging to do in a foreign language. Hopefully the phrases that we cover this week will make it easier for you when someone you know loses a loved one and you want to comfort them.

Today's sympathy phrase is: You're in my thoughts and prayers.

Use / explanation: We use this phrase to show that we are thinking of someone and we are wishing them strength.

Sentence 1: Jackie, I'm so sorry to hear about your father's death. You’re in my thoughts and prayers as you navigate this loss.

Sentence 2: Mark... I heard about what you’re going through, and I just want you to know that you’re in my thoughts and prayers.

👉 To get some English practice, I encourage you to write your own original sentence with this phrase. You can share your sentence on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky) and we will give you feedback about your writing as soon as we can. We appreciate your participation.

I hope the rest of your day goes well.

All the best!
