EXPRESSIONS WITH 'HAVING' (FUN/A GOOD TIME): meaning and examples

Hello to you all and happy Monday. How was your weekend?

We are beginning a week of lessons about Expressions with the present participle "having." You might know that English has Action and Non-Action (or stative) verbs; stative verbs describe states, senses, desires, possession, emotions and opinion. Normally, we cannot use Non-Action/Stative verbs with Progressive tenses, such as the Present Progressive.

Example 1 (non-action verb): I see two dogs over there. (correct)

Example 2 (non-action verb): ***I am seeing two dogs over there.*** (incorrect)

However, there are exceptions: there are times when we can use a Non-Action/Stative verb with -ING (Progressive) tenses. One example is with Expressions with "Having."

Today's expression is HAVING FUN / HAVING A GOOD TIME

Definition: Enjoying a situation (usually an activity or social event).

Example 1: I'm having a great time. Thank you for inviting me to your party.

Example 2: Are you having fun at the party? You seem bored.

Tomorrow we will look at another "having" expression. Until then, take care!
