EXPRESSIONS WITH ‘NEW’: A NEW LEASE ON/OF LIFE: meaning and examples

Today's idiom is: A NEW LEASE ON / OF LIFE

Definition 1: Feeling more energetic and active than before.

Example 1: We gave our 13-year-old dog new medicine and it's as if she had a new lease of life. She's running and wagging her tail like when she was three years old!

Definition 2: An increase in the time that something can be used or continued. 

Example 2: When she was young, she went to jail for selling drugs. In jail, she entered a program to help young girls go to school and stay away from drugs. She says she got a new lease on life thanks to this program.

NOTE: "A new lease OF life" is more common in the UK and "a new lease ON life" is more common in the US and Canada.
