EXPRESSIONS WITH PANTS: FANCY-PANTS: meaning and examples

Welcome back and happy Monday, Daily Vitamin readers!

I hope you will find this week's theme fun (and that it will take your mind off the Coronavirus). It's Expressions with PANTS.

If you are accustomed to British English, then you are probably laughing right now. In British English, PANTS means… underwear! However, in American English, it means normal outerwear for your legs (like jeans or slacks). This week we are looking at expressions using this word.

Today's colloquial expression is: FANCY-PANTS

Definition: Superior or high-class; pretentious; elaborate.

Example 1: My kids are taking me to some fancy-pants awards show. I don't know what to wear.

Example 2: We went to this fancy-pants restaurant. It was good, but expensive.

We sometimes refer to someone as MR FANCY-PANTS or MRS FANCY-PANTS when they are being pretentious. Or, jokingly, we call someone MR / MRS FANCY-PANTS when they are dressed very formally or acting pretentious.

Example 3: Look at Mr Fancy-Pants with his new suit and tie!

Example 4: I'm not sure what to wear to this formal event. Why don't you ask your brother, Mr Fancy-Pants, for recommendations?

That's it for today. Join us tomorrow for another expression!
