FALL-1

Good morning everybody!

Hace unos días terminamos de repasar el verbo inglés to fall en la Daily Vitamin diaria. A lo largo de las siguientes semanas, en la Essential Weekly Vitamin, también vamos a repasar este verbo tan versátil. 

En inglés hay cientos de expresiones que usan el verbo to fall. Un ejemplo muy popular es to fall in love (enamorarse).

Example 1:
When I first met her, I thought she was very attractive. However, I didn't fall in love with her until I got to know her better.
(Cuando la conocí me pareció muy atractiva. Sin embargo, no me enamoré de ella hasta que la llegué a conocer mejor.)

Today's second expression is: To fall for something.

Puede ser un sinónimo de to fall in love.

Meaning 1: to be attracted to a man/woman; to fall in love. (Ser atraído/a por un/a hombre/mujer; enamorarse.)

Example 2:
After getting to know her, I really fell for her. Now we are married.
(Después de llegar a conocerla, me enamoré totalmente de ella. Ahora estamos casados.)

Meaning 2: to believe that a trick or a practical joke is true. (Creer que un truco o una broma es verdad.)

Example 3:
How could you fall for such an obvious trick?
(¿Cómo has podido tragarte una broma tan obvia?)

Example 4:
The street beggar told me that he needed 10 cents for a phone call and I gave it to him. When I saw him a week later and he again asked me for 10 cents for a phone call, I realised that the week before I had fallen for his trick to get money from strangers.
(El mendigo me dijo que necesitaba 10 céntimos para hacer una llamada y se los di. Cuando le vi una semana más tarde y de nuevo me pidió 10 céntimos, me di cuenta que la semana anterior me había tragado su truco para sacar dinero de los desconocidos.)
