FALSE FRIEND: COLLEAGUE (REVISION): meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we look at a common false friend that very often causes confusion. This lesson was originally sent in February of 2009.

Today's word is: colleague

Meaning: a person you work with, especially in a profession or business.

Notice that it does NOT mean a friend (as the informal use of colega can mean in Spanish).

Example 1:
Mother: Is she your girlfriend?
Son: No mum, she is just a colleague from work. We are not involved romantically.

Example 2:
We were friends and colleagues for more than fifteen years.

Remember that tomorrow we will send the Essential Weekly Vitamin for Spanish-speaking students of English.

I'll see you tomorrow.
