FUN vs. FUNNY: meaning and examples

Good morning / afternoon / evening everybody, depending on when you are reading this. I hope all of you had a great weekend. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin.

Do you know what the difference between the following sentences is?
(i) The class was funny.
(ii) The class was fun.

The difference comes from the difference in meaning of the two adjectives.

Funny means: someone or something that makes you laugh.
Fun means: enjoyable.

We use funny to talk about things or people that make us laugh and we use fun to talk about things that are enjoyable or people we enjoy being with. So in (i) the class was comical and in (ii) the class was enjoyable.

Example 1
Many people don't agree, but I think learning English is very fun.

Example 2
My English teacher is very funny; she makes me laugh a lot.

Example 3
Chris is a fun person to be around; he's intelligent, funny and very polite.

There is one more thing you should know. Unlike "funny", fun can also be a noun: We have lots of fun in English class.
