GIVE UP: meaning and examples

Last Friday we looked at the expression take up. Today's expression has the opposite meaning.
Today's expression is: Give up
It means: to stop a habit or routine.
Example 1:
John is trying to give up smoking.
Example 2:
I gave up drinking alcohol in 2003. It was one of the best decisions of my life.
Hopefully you have taken up doing something with English every day, and you won't give it up soon!
