HARDLY-2: meaning and examples

Today's word is: hardly

Meaning 3: used after "can" or "could" to emphasize that it is difficult to do something.

Example 1:
I am very tired; I can hardly keep my eyes open.

Example 2:
I could hardly believe what I was reading. The newspaper article exposed all the secrets of the company!

Meaning 4: used to say that something is unlikely or unreasonable or that someone is silly for saying or doing something.

Example 3:
It's hardly surprising that she was fired; she arrived late almost every day and never did much work.
