HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT...?
HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT...?: meaning and examples
Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope your week has started off well.
Today we continue our look at phrases that we can use to give other people advice. As I said yesterday, all of the phrases that we will present this week are quite polite; they are suggestions, not commands.
Today's 1st advice phrase is: Have you thought about...?
Example 1:
Son: I am really struggling in my Advanced Math class.
Father: Have you thought about joining a study group?
Son: No, but I think I'm going to look into the possibility tomorrow.
Today's 2nd advice phrase is: It would be a good idea to...
Example 2: I know you're having lots of problems with some of the members of your team. I think it would be a good idea to talk to your supervisor. She has lots of experience with this kind of thing and I'm sure that she can help you.
Both of these phrases are polite; instead of telling the person what to do, you are giving an indirect suggestion.
👉 And now some practice for you! Have you thought about writing your own original sentence for each of these advice phrases? You can post your sentences on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky) and we will give you feedback about your writing ASAP.
We'll be back tomorrow with two more polite, indirect-advice phrases.
Have a great day!
