HOLD-1: meaning and examples

Good morning everyone.

After answering Rita's question about hold on and hang on yesterday, today we begin our look at more expressions with hold.

Today's hold expression is: to hold something back

Meaning 1: to not tell someone something that they want or need to know.

Example 1:
He says he doesn't know who is responsible for the new vacation policy, but I think he is holding back information.

Meaning 2: to stop yourself from expressing how you really feel.

Example 2:
After she told him that she was leaving him, he held back his tears. Once she left, however, he began to cry.
