HOMOPHONES: HEAR vs. HERE: meaning and examples

Hello again, everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin! I hope you're having a great day.

For the next five lessons, we are going to look at some homophones in English.

A homophone is a word that sounds the same as another word but has a different meaning and often a different spelling. For example, today's words HEAR and HERE are homophones because they are pronounced the same, but they have different meanings and spellings.

Today's homophones are: HEAR and HERE

Meaning of HEAR: this verb means to perceive, with the ear, the sound made by someone or something.

Example 1: During the class, I could hear people speaking in the back of the room. It was very disruptive.

Meaning of HERE: this adverb is used to express in, at, or to this place or position.

Example 2: I have lived here, in Barcelona, for most of my life.

Can you create your own original sentence using one or both of these homophones? You can post your sentences on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter/X) and we will give you feedback about them ASAP.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

All the best!
