HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH IN THE SUMMER (HABITS & CONSISTENCY): meaning and examples

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the last Daily Vitamin lesson of the 2022-2023 academic year.

I hope all of you enjoyed the webinar yesterday and found it helpful. Today I want to finish up this week of Daily Vitamins about how to improve your English in the summer, or any time of the year.

One of the most important things to do when you want to learn English is to create the daily habit of doing something with English. You can have a great English plan, but if you don't follow it, then nothing will happen. Creating a habit doesn't have to be difficult, but many people have trouble creating new habits. Today I wanted to speak about creating mental support, or mental habits, that will make being consistent with your English much easier.

Many students question themselves, or don't even think they have the ability to learn English. When you catch yourself having those non-supportive thoughts, replace them with an idea like, "I have a strong desire to learn English and I am practicing English every day. I will improve my English with time."

You can also come up with an affirmation. Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. Following is an example of an affirmation.

Sample Affirmation: I am so happy and grateful now that I am consistently dedicating at least 30 minutes to my English every day. I enjoy learning and I have fun using English in my daily life.

You can repeat your affirmation aloud, write it 10 times in the morning when you wake up and 10 times before going to bed. You can record it and listen to it over and over while you exercise or do some other activity. What you are trying to do is reprogramme your subconscious mind and your deep-rooted beliefs about your ability to learn English. Just as we do repetitive exercises to improve our physical health, affirmations are like exercises for our mind and attitude. These positive mental repetitions can reprogram our thinking patterns so that, over time, we begin to think – and act – differently.

I hope all of you have a wonderful summer filled with lots of English practice. We will be back with new Daily Vitamin lessons on Monday, September 18th.

All the best!
