Definition: Unhappy; sad. 

Example 1: I wrote the letter with a heavy heart. I loved her, but I didn't think we had a future together. 

Example 2: It is with a heavy heart that we announce our divorce. 

This expression is used with life events that are a little depressing; we hope you don't have a heavy heart after reading this post.
