I'M PULLING YOUR LEG: meaning and examples

Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin, and the last lesson of the week. I hope your week has been excellent.

Today we look at two final phases related to jokes and pranks; I know April Fools' Day was on Tuesday, but we still feel like speaking about jokes and pranks. smiley

Today's 1st phrase is: I'm pulling your leg

Meaning / Use: The phrase I'm pulling your leg is an idiom that means "I'm joking with you" or "I'm teasing you in a playful way." It is often used when someone says something that isn’t true just to have a bit of fun.

Dialogue 1:
Alex: I just won the lottery! I’m quitting my job tomorrow.
Sam: What? Wow... that’s amazing! How much did you win?
Alex: Haha, I’m only pulling your leg. I wish it were true.

Today's 2nd phrase is: No way! Are you serious?

Meaning / Use: This phrase is a common response when hearing a shocking or unbelievable statement.

Dialogue 2:
Sophie: I heard that Mr. Johnson is retiring next month.
Ben: No way! Are you serious? He’s been teaching here forever!
Sophie: I know! It’s going to feel so weird without him.

👉 I encourage you to write your own sentence or dialogue with one or both of today's phrases. You can post your sentences or dialogues on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky) and we will give you feedback about your writing ASAP.

I hope the rest of your day goes well and I hope you have an excellent weekend. We'll be back on Monday with lessons about metaphors that we use in everyday life.

All the best!
