INTERJECTIONS (1): meaning and examples

Good morning!

For the rest of this week we are going to look at a series of sounds or interjections. Interjections are sounds or "words" that have no grammatical meaning that are used to express emotions.

When people speak, they make a lot of sounds which are not words. They make sounds of surprise, shock, interest, warning, boredom... these are sounds that expresses a reaction to a situation or comment! We are going to explain what some of these sounds are in English and compare them with their Spanish equivalent. Properly using interjections (in addition to English words) is a way to sound more like a native speaker.

Today's interjection is: OOPS! / WHOOPS!

We use it when: we have done something by accident that can have a negative consequence, like breaking a vase.

A possible translation: ¡Ay!

Example 1:
Melanie: Oops! I broke your vase! I hope it wasn't expensive. Here let me clean it up.
Theo: Oh well, don't worry. I can get another one.

Example 2:
Jared: Whoops! I forgot to bring your books back. I know you needed them for tomorrow's class.
Ken: Oh no! You're right; I need them to study tonight. Is there anyway you can go back home and get them?

Tomorrow we will look at another interjection in English.

Until then, have a great day!
