INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY: SUFFRAGE: meaning and examples

Happy Friday, everyone!

I hope you've enjoyed this week of lessons related to women in honour of International Women's Day. It has been difficult to choose just five words or expressions.

Today we are completing this week's lessons with the word: SUFFRAGE

Definition: The right to vote in political elections.

In most cases, we use the term Women's Suffrage to speak about movements in history where women demanded the right to vote.

Example 1: During the Women's Suffrage movement, my great-aunt was put in jail. She would be so proud to know that now, women are political leaders in some countries.

Example 2: I just read the most fascinating book about Women's Suffrage in the US.

We call a person who fights for the right to vote a SUFFRAGIST. There was a time when we also used the term SUFFRAGETTE for women, usually in a negative way; over time, people have forgotten the controversial connotations of the word, using it to describe any supporter of women’s suffrage in any country.

You can read about the interesting history of this word in this TIME Magazine article from 2015: https://time.com/4079176/suffragette-word-history-film/

That's all for this week. I hope you learned something new! Thank you to all of the women, past and present, who have made this world a better place. You deserve respect, admiration, and equality.
