INVESTIGATION vs. RESEARCH
INVESTIGATION vs. RESEARCH: meaning and examples
Hello again everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you are having a great day.
Today I wanted to go over two words that can often be confused in English: INVESTIGATION and RESEARCH
These words are synonymous in many ways, but there are subtle differences.
Meaning of INVESTIGATION: the act or process of carefully examining a crime, a problem, a statement, etc. in order to discover the truth.
Meaning of RESEARCH: the detailed study of a subject in order to discover new information or reach a new understanding.
In general, 'investigation' is done by the police or the FBI, for example, while 'research' is done by university professors and scientists.
Example 1:
She has spent most of her life carrying out scientific research about cancer at Stanford University.
Example 2:
So far, the police investigation into the robbery at the central bank has not produced any suspects or interesting conclusions.
We looked at these words for the first time in a Daily Vitamin in April of 2004 and then again last year (in February 2023). You can find last year's lesson at the following URL: https://www.ziggurat.es/lecciones-ingles/research-vs-investigation/4251/
Can you create your own original sentences using one or both of these words. You can post your sentences on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter/X) and we will give you feedback about your sentences as soon as we can.
I hope the rest of your day goes very well.
All the best!
