ITS / IT'S: meaning and examples

Today we look at another pair of homophones in English. Remember, homophones are pairs or groups of different words that are pronounced the same.
Today's homophones are: Its and It's. They are pronounced exactly the same.
Meaning "Its": Its is a determiner that indicates belonging to or relating to something that has already been mentioned. See the examples below.
Example 1: Ziggurat Corporate Language School celebrated its 20th anniversary on June 1st of this year.
Example 2: The cat hurt its paw when it stepped on a thumbtack.
Meaning "It's": it's is the contraction of it is or it has.
Example 3: Can you please hand me my glass? It's the one on the coffee table with water in it. Thanks! (=it is)
Example 4: That is the strangest chair I have ever seen. It's got 5 legs instead of 3 or 4. (=it has)
Example 5: That sweater is so faded; it's lost all of its colour. It's been through a lot over the past 4 years. (= it has x 2 & its as a determiner)
