KEEN (REVIEW): meaning and examples

Good morning. Today's Daily Vitamin was originally sent in November of 2003.

Today's word is: keen

Meaning: Keen is used quite a lot in conversation and tends to be used more in the UK than in the US. It is used in various ways, but there are two meanings that are probably the most common:

Meaning 1: to speak positively about someone's mental abilities or senses (examples 1 and 2, below).

Meaning 2: to talk about someone's interest in an activity that they enjoy a lot (example 3, below).

Example 1:
My students are very keen. They are learning very quickly.

Example 2:
Ever since my wife has been pregnant, she has a very keen sense of smell.

Example 3:
My boss is a keen gardener. He spends all of his weekends in his garden.
