LAST EXPRESSIONS-3 (EWV): meaning and examples

Meaning: to make someone who has criticized or defeated you look stupid by succeeding at something more important.
(Significado: hacer quedar mal a alguien, quien te ha criticado o derrotado, teniendo éxito en algo más importante.)
Example 1:
We fired her last year but she had the last laugh because she was hired by our main competitor at twice the salary!
(La echamos el año pasado pero fue contratada por nuestro principal competidor con el doble de sueldo; quien ríe el último ríe mejor)
Example 2:
They claimed victory very early. But after all the votes were counted, we had won; we had the last laugh.
(Cantaron victoria antes de tiempo. Pero después de que se contaran todos los votos, resultó que habíamos ganado. ¡Quién ríe último, ríe mejor!)
