LEARNING SLANG (CRAM): meaning and examples

Hello everyone and welcome back to another year of Daily Vitamin lessons. I hope everyone had a great summer and is ready to learn more English with the Daily Vitamin.

We are kicking off the 2021-2022 academic year with some slang expressions related to study and school, since many are returning to classes this month. Slang words are words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, and are more common in speech than writing.

Today's slang word is: TO CRAM

Definition: to study intensively over a short period of time just before an examination.

Sentence 1: Anthony has done virtually nothing during the whole academic year, but for the last 48 hours he has been locked in his bedroom cramming for the final exam. He has barely slept in two days!

Sentence 2: The professor cancelled the last day of class to give the students time to cram for the midterm exam.

Sentence 3: When you cram for an exam, you generally don't pass the information to long-term memory, so you may forget it very quickly.

Cramming for an exam is not a very good practice, so I don't recommend it.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your day; we'll see you back here tomorrow with some more slang.

All the best!
