LEAVE-4: meaning and examples
Hello again.
Today we conclude our review of expressions that have the verb leave in them.
Today's expression is: to leave somebody/something behind
Meaning 1: to make much better progress than somebody. [NOTE: We often use this expression in the passive.]
Example 1:
Spain is being left behind in the race for new markets in Europe.
Example 2:
China has left the rest of the world behind in economic growth.
Meaning 2: to leave a person or place, usually permanently.
Example 3:
As she left the villiage to move to the far-away city, she knew she was leaving her childhood behind.
