LIKE-2: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we continue our look at some expressions with and uses of the word like. Today we look at some uses of like as an adverb.

Meaning: used in very informal speech as filler, for example when you are thinking what to say next.

This is one of the most common uses of like in spoken English, especially amongst younger speakers in the US. Here like is being used as filler (una muletilla).

Example 1:
Dude... it was, like, kind of strange.

Example 2:
Life is really hard sometimes. Like I have no time for my own things...only work. 

Example 3:
The film was, like, really scary!

In very informal speech like can also mean to say (I say, he says, etc.). This is especially common in the US.

Example 4:
When I heard his explanation of why he was late, I'm like "no way." That's no excuse man!
